Some people grow up with an unshakable sense that they’re different. They observe more, feel more, and carry questions others don’t seem to ask. They might blend in externally but feel internally detached. They’ve learned how to move through the world without ever truly feeling part of it.
For many, this quiet disconnection eventually turns into something louder. A sense of not having a place. Not knowing who they are. Not trusting that anyone really sees them. Holistic counselling with Nathan Gurry offers a way to explore these experiences without needing to fix or explain them.
Belonging Isn’t About Fitting In
Fitting in is often about adjusting who you are to meet expectations. Belonging is something deeper. It happens when you can show up as yourself – not the version that’s been shaped by what others find acceptable.
People who don’t feel they belong have often spent years adapting, performing or retreating. Many are highly self-aware but still unsure where they feel at home. Some feel spiritually disconnected. Others have identities that don’t conform to norms, or emotional worlds that don’t seem to match those around them.
Holistic counselling makes space for these tensions. It doesn’t offer surface strategies. It invites honesty, emotional clarity and deeper understanding.
What Patients Often Say Before Starting
- “I’ve never felt like I truly belonged anywhere – not even in my own family.”
- “I always feel slightly outside of things, even in groups I care about.”
- “I’ve shaped myself to match others, but I don’t know who I am anymore.”
- “I feel like I’m too much or not enough, depending on the setting.”
What Happens in Counselling
Sessions are guided by presence and awareness. There is no fixed method, no performance required. You don’t need to explain why you feel this way. We start from what’s real.
Some people speak. Others begin with silence or uncertainty. Together, we begin to listen for what you’ve had to leave out, suppress or hold alone.
Themes that often emerge include:
- Chronic sense of being “outside” social or family systems
- Deep longing for authenticity in relationships
- Shame, withdrawal or people-pleasing
- Confusion about identity, values or direction
- Avoidance of groups, social anxiety or masking
- Spiritual or existential questions that feel hard to name
In-Person and Online Counselling Available
Nathan sees patients at Brisbane Livewell Clinic (Wavell Heights) and also works online with adults across Australia. Many patients prefer video sessions for comfort, convenience and privacy.
Quote from Nathan Gurry
“A lot of people carry this quiet ache – a sense of not quite landing anywhere. They may have friends, jobs, even relationships, and still feel like they’re outside looking in. Counselling doesn’t force belonging. But it does make space to find where you’ve been missing from your own experience.”

FAQs
1. Can counselling help if I feel like I’ve never truly belonged?
Yes. Holistic counselling supports people who have experienced long-term disconnection, internal masking or identity confusion. The focus is not on changing who you are but helping you reconnect with your sense of self.
2. What causes someone to feel like they don’t belong?
Belonging issues often stem from childhood environments, cultural or neurodivergent difference, emotional suppression, trauma, or having needs and values that were not seen or accepted.
3. What happens in a session about belonging?
Sessions are shaped around how you’re feeling. There’s space to explore your internal experience at your own pace, including silence or emotional overwhelm. You’re not expected to explain or justify your experience.
4. Is this only for people with a formal diagnosis?
No. You don’t need any diagnosis to begin this work. Many patients come because something feels “off” internally – even if they can’t define it.
5. Is this suitable for people who feel spiritually lost or disconnected?
Yes. Questions about purpose, meaning or spiritual identity are welcome in holistic counselling. You can bring your full experience – including the parts you’re still unsure about.
6. What if I don’t know who I am anymore?
That’s a common starting point. Holistic counselling offers space to gently explore what’s been lost or left behind and begin reconnecting with yourself over time.
7. Do you work with neurodivergent people who feel alienated?
Yes. Many of Nathan’s patients are autistic, ADHD or resonate with neurodivergent traits. Sessions are pressure-free, sensory-aware and emotionally attuned.
8. What if I’ve been rejected by communities or relationships in the past?
Experiences of rejection often shape how we relate to ourselves. Counselling can help you understand how those wounds formed and how they may still be impacting your relationships or self-worth.
9. Is this therapy or coaching?
This is non-clinical counselling shaped by presence and deep listening. It doesn’t follow a script or impose techniques. It’s more relational and responsive than goal-oriented coaching.
10. Can I do this work online?
Yes. Online sessions are available for patients across Australia. Many people who feel socially overwhelmed or energetically depleted prefer this format.
11. I’ve felt like this all my life – is it too late to change?
It’s not too late. While the patterns may be long-held, the process of coming home to yourself can begin whenever you feel ready. Small shifts in awareness can create deep changes over time.
12. I’ve tried group work or therapy before and didn’t feel safe – is this different?
Holistic counselling is one-on-one and paced according to what you need. You’ll never be pushed to disclose or explore something you’re not ready for.
13. How frequently do people attend sessions?
Some patients come weekly, others fortnightly or monthly. Frequency is based on what feels manageable and meaningful for you.
14. How do I book a session with Nathan Gurry?
Call Reception on (07) 3861 5881 or book online via Brisbane Livewell Clinic. Nathan sees patients in person at Wavell Heights and online via video.
