Dealing With Parasites Living Within You

Last updated on 28 December 2025 by Brisbane Livewell Clinic Editorial Team

Are you dealing with parasites living within you? Health considerations often ignore parasites. The reason for this is quite simple; they mostly affect human health in subtle ways. However, their occupation within our body can be quite harmful to our health in the long term.

They usually don’t get noticed by the patient themselves because their existence within the body doesn’t necessarily manifest into any symptoms. However, when/if their population increases or when a certain type of parasite attacks, the results can be devastating for the individual.

Before we move any further, let us describe what parasites actually are, for those who are unfamiliar with the concept and the term. A parasitic organism is anything that takes energy from the host that it occupies. It is a common misconception to believe that parasites only occur in the bodies of people who live in underdeveloped conditions. Parasites are just as much, or perhaps even more of a reality for North Americans. A study points out that almost eighty-five to ninety-five per cent of North Americans have some form of parasites within their body.

Practically, this means that almost everyone has a form of parasite in their bodies. Interestingly, parasites have an overwhelming variety. They vary in size and even in species. Viruses and bacteria are parasites that are single-celled and microscopic; however, there are certain parasites like tapeworms that can have a length of up to 12 metres!

Symptoms With Parasites Living Within You

One of the most interesting things about parasites is that they owe allegiance to their colloquial meaning, which means that they are devious and have extremely effective ways of staying hidden. They often mimic the symptoms of other diseases; however, when they do manifest into noticeable symptoms, it is often in the form of persistent diarrhoea, itching in and around the anus at night, trouble sleeping, anaemic symptoms, difficulty in weight management, light-headedness, chronic fatigue, palpitations and cramps in the intestine.

Parasites come from various sources, but their manifestations highlight the conventional importance of hygiene. Undercooked food is a source of parasites – especially meat. Other sources include unhygienic water, unwashed fruits and vegetables, or/and contact with soil.
